Promontorio

Flamingo, Costa Rica

A full renovation of an existing house at the end of the Flamingo peninsula, with reconfigured plans, a relocated pool, a new glass-enclosed social space and a rooftop crow's nest with 360-degree views.

Promontorio sits at the end of the Flamingo peninsula in Guanacaste, with uninterrupted views of the ocean. The project is a complete reworking of an existing house. Inverse Project reconfigured the layouts, moved the pool and redesigned the architecture, interiors and landscape together as a single commission.

The pool and the main social areas were rebuilt and are now joined by a new glass-enclosed space. The house is made up of separate volumes, and the design uses that layout: circulation runs outdoors through a series of courtyards, and cross-ventilation between the volumes keeps the rooms cool.

The central courtyard is now the focus of the house, with a winding path through a sheltered tropical garden. Where the old pool used to be, a raised yoga deck sits over the former basin, which now stores water. On the roof, a new crow's nest terrace has views in every direction, across the ocean, the bay and the hills behind Flamingo.
