Casa Puggo

Mar a Mar, Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

A cantilevered multi-level residence in Santa Teresa that steps and rotates to track ocean and jungle views from every level, with floor-to-ceiling glass and wrap-around decks on a ridge that drops sharply to the canopy below.

Casa Puggo takes its name from a spirit animal — a creature that moves through nature by instinct, following the land and the light rather than imposing on them. The house does the same. Sitting within the Mar a Mar development in Santa Teresa, the lot begins flat before falling sharply off the ridge to reveal a layered panorama of jungle canopy and Pacific Ocean. The design responds with a cantilevered, multi-level form that floats above the landscape — its striking angles drawn precisely by the views, rotating and stepping to catch the ocean at every level. Floor-to-ceiling glass dissolves the line between inside and out, while extensive wrap-around decks bring the social areas into full contact with the immersive jungle environment around them.

Moving through Casa Puggo is an exhilarating experience. The journey unfolds in sequence: a private arrival courtyard, then the living level opening to views of an internal garden, the ocean, and the forest simultaneously — each turn in the plan revealing something new. The sleeping level sits above, connected by the vertical flow of the section, its rooms opening to private balconies and a green roof that dissolves back into the ridge. Deep origami eaves provide shade to every face of the building. Solar panels are integrated into the roof plane. The palette is light and fresh — cool whites and naturals with deliberate splashes of local colour and handcrafted texture — keeping the interior airy and cool as the breezes move freely through the house.
